Solidarity Meals - Supplying food to vulnerable families and individuals
Solidarity Meals aims at providing a lifeline for those families and individuals struggling during the COVID-19 crisis. Solidarity Meals delivers hundreds of meals daily to distribution centres around the island where volunteers led by Caritas (Malta) ensure that the meals are taken to people in their homes. The service started off with 200 meals and is now providing 750 daily. This number is expected to rise and Solidarity Meals can rely on support to increase up to 1000 meals daily. Solidarity Meals welcomes contributions in the form of fresh produce like fruit and vegetables, bread, dairy produce and fish.
Supplying food to Malta’s most vulnerable families
Foodbank Lifeline Foundation supplies a variety of food packs to the most vulnerable families in Malta, which are all referred to them by various entities, such as Apogg, Leap, Caritas, St Jeanne Antide, Oncology department. They had about 650 families registered and, prior to COVID-19, were seeing an average of 150 families collecting weekly grocery packs. Since Covid19, they have seen a dramatic increase in numbers to almost 300 - 400 families. Anyone wishing to donate food can contact the Foodbank Lifeline Foundation directly and they will arrange to collect.
Malta Trust Foundation has already received 3,000 requests for help as the economic crisis created by the COVID-19 pandemic further destabilises the vulnerable and poor in society. The Malta Trust Foundation is collaborating with NGOs — such as Caritas, the Millennium Chapel, Little Sisters of the Poor, Richmond Foundation, St Jeanne Antide and Gozo’s Foundation for Social Welfare, among others — to provide food supplies to vulnerable families as their resources are overstretched as they struggle to help the increasing number of people coming forward. If you’re a company or have the means to donate large amounts of food, please contact them directly to see how you can help.
A dive centre in Ghajnsielem Gozo, supported by the Local Council, has been transformed into a foodbank to provide immediate relief for those Gozitans who have fallen on hard times since the COVID-19 outbreak. Families with young children, single parents and elderly people have been given aid. If you wish to donate or support, please contact them.
Connecting people’s needs to those offering to help
Malta Charity Central is a Facebook Group that aims to connect charities with the many generous individuals or companies in Malta. This group is intended for use as a notice board for charities or individuals involved in any kind of voluntary work to advise of any particular requirements/needs they may have. It can also be used to announce and promote fund-raising events organised by charities. In a small community like ours, Malta Charity Central believes that Facebook, together with everyone’s input, can make a big difference and make us all aware of what is happening and what is needed locally.
